Welcome back to the NHL Hat Trick.

ICYMI - The NHL Season Preview & Strategy guide goes over the basics of NHL DFS and what I look for when researching players.

Today, DraftKings is throwing out their $100K Sticks [$25K to First] contest. I have 6 entries in this contest, but it's a 150-max contest. Do I have a chance? I think so, and I'll talk about my approach to throwing a few entries into a giant GPP at the bottom of the newsletter. But first, let's dive into today's slate.

Tonight's Slate

Here's numbers on the teams from their past 10 games. Generally, I start my research by looking for teams in good spots. For example, teams that score goals (GF60) that are facing teams that give up goals (GA60). I also look at teams that shoot a lot (CF60) that are facing teams that give up a lot of shots (CA60).

Legend: CF% = Corsi For Percentage, CF60 = Corsi For Per60 min, CA = Corsi Allowed Per 60 Min, HDCF60 = High Danger Corsi For Per 60 Min, HDCA60 = High Danger Corsi Allowed Per 60 Min, SF60 = Shots on Goal For Per 60 Min, SA60 = Shots on Goal Allowed Per 60 Min, SOT = % of Shot Attempts On Goal, Sh% = % of Shots on Goal That Are Goals, SCF60 = Scoring Chances For Per 60 Min, SCA60 = Scoring Chances Allowed Per 60 Min, GF60 = Goals For Per 60 Min, GA60 = Goals Allowed Per 60.

Goaltender Rankings

How to Interpret This: I've added LineStar Projected Ownership, LineStar Projected Fantasy Points, and Goalie GAA (Goals Saved Above Average), and Saves/60, along with my projected upside for each goalie. Generally, I'm looking for goalies that I think will get a win with a positive (green) GSAA and a high saves number.

As always - double-check that your goalie is starting before the game starts.

My Favorite:

Kevin Lankinen - CHI (DK: $7300, FD: $7300) *EXPECTED STARTER*

If you're playing cash, you're probably better off playing Vasilevskiy or Fleury. However, I'm going to take a chance on Lankinen tonight in GPPs. He's been playing well and should see a good shot volume tonight and possibly outscore both Vasilevskiy and Fleury

Forwards and Defensemen Rankings

How to Interpret C/D/W charts: In NHL DFS, I think it's most important to look at peripheral stats instead of goals which is why I put so much emphasis on shots. This includes shot attempts, high danger shot attempts (those shot attempts closest to the net with the highest probability of going into the net), and shots on goal. I've included projections and average fantasy points to see how each compares so you can more easily find value.

Center

My Favorite

Aleksander Barkov - FLA (DK: $7700, FD: $7400)

His price has been creeping up, but he has great shot volume and has a great matchup against a Detroit team that is allowing 3.6 goals a game.

Wing

My Favorite:

Alex DeBrincat - CHI (DK: $6600, FD: $6600)

Give me all the DeBrincat tonight. I really love Chicago tonight in GPP and love DeBrincat's shot volume.

Defensemen

My Favorite

Darnell Nurse - EDM (DK: $5900, FD: $5600)

Nurse is my top-ranked defenseman tonight and gives me exposure to Edmonton, who is facing an Ottawa team that is allowing a slate-worst 4.5 goals a game.

Bottom of the Barrel

Here are my cheap calls for a skater to pick up a goal or assist.

Vladislav Namestnikov: DET - C (DK: $3.3K, FD: $4.1K)

Jakob Silfverberg: ANH - W (DK: $4.1K, FD: $5.5K)

Erik Cernak: TBL - D (DK: $3.1K, FD: $3.7K)

Line Stacks

Here are my ranked stacks for tonight:

DFS Strategy - Throwing a few entries into a 150-max

Every GPP entry starts with big dreams. I already have deposits on what I'll spend my money on if I take home $25K tonight. However, the reality is, I'm going up against a good number of other and equally, if not more, talented players. As the night moves along, I might go from the screenshot life to just hoping to min-cash. That's DFS for you.

Still, I have 6 entries into the big NHL GPP on DraftKings tonight and while I would love to win, I ultimately want to get something back from my entries which were all won from tickets. While some people like to try to get cute with their entries and shoot for the moon, I want to try to be smart about it. I start by focusing on teams that I expect to do well. Here are my rankings on probability for team stacks to be in the winning lineup.

With that in mind, I know that I can't stack EDM and TBL together. On DraftKings, I budget roughly $34K-$35K for my two 3-3 stacks. Now, I could do TBL1 and LAK1 or VGK1 with LAK1. Those are legit possibilities. If I drop down to CHI2, I have more possibilities.

With 6 lineups, I usually try to pick what is ultimately my favorite stacks (right now CHI2, TBL1, LAK1, EDMPP1, and VGKPP1) and see how many of those I can fit together in viable lineups. If I lose, I lose, but at least I go down with my favorite plays of the night.

I'll let you know how I do tomorrow.
