Welcome to the NHL Hat Trick.

Pretty excited as we get a solid 5 games on the schedule today.

Now, I'm someone who definitely believes in momentum in the playoffs so I'm going to primarily focus on teams that won game 1 (DAL-CGY is tied at 1-1). That means that I'm going to have a lot of Colorado, Vancouver, Islanders, and Avs today.

DFS Approach

I had a pretty solid night last night despite missing the Pastrnak news, which should be a solid reminder to set an alarm to remind yourself to check news during warmups and make sure there are no late scratches.

For the most part, my lineups were 3-3 team stacks with less emphasis on line stacking. I think I'm going to continue rolling out that strategy with hopes that I get a good hit today.

What do you think? Let me know in LineStar Chat

LETSSSSSSSSGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Goaltender

Guess who's confirmed for tonight at the time of this writing? Absolutely no one. Like I said, make sure your goalie is confirmed during warmups.

My Favorite: Carter Hart - PHI (DK: $8200, FD: $8600)

Hart has been solid, averaging 1.2 GAA and 29 saves over his last 5 starts and I'm pretty confident rolling him out today in my lineups.

Centers

My Favorite: Nazem Kadri - CAR (DK: $5600, FD: $5900)

With a player like MacKinnon, I think players on the second and third lines for Colorado often get overlooked. I think if you want to get nasty, you can roll out Kadri with MacKinnon and get exposure to both top lines as well as the top powerplay unit.

Winger

My Favorite: Anthony Beauvillier - NYI (DK: $4300, FD: $5200)

Beauvillier has scored a point in each game since the NHL resumed play. I'll even go so far as to make this my sub 5%-owned goal call for today.

Defensemen

My Favorite: Miro Heiskanen - DAL (DK: $5000, FD: $5000)

Heiskanen is a stud and in that perfect range of salary for me. Not too expensive, but not cheap enough for me to be over owned. Good shot volume, blocks a shot or two, PP1 time, and gets over 23 minutes of ice time.

If you take anything away from this, keep in mind that hockey is a high-variance sport. The top ranked player in each category could be a great play or be a dud tonight. Going all in on any player probably isn't a great move.

With DFS, I try to think of these things:

  • Who makes the most sense to play?

  • Where is the field leaning?

  • Who has been the most consistent?

  • Who has the most upside?

  • Who will benefit me most if others are wrong?

Bottom of the Barrel

Some people call these "value" plays or "salary savers." I hate both terms. These are players that I like that fit at the lowest salary tier. It could be they're playing on one of the top forward lines or it could be that they've been playing well, but these are my cheap calls for a skater to pick up a goal or assist.

JT Compher: COL- C (DK: $3800, FD: $4400)

Scott Laugton: PHI - W (DK: $4000, FD: $4000)

Travis Sanheim: PHI - D (DK: $4500, FD: $4500)

Line Stacks

Line stacking is a common strategy in GPP. You’ll see a lot of winning lineups where players are stacked from the same forward lines or power play lines. DraftKings allows a maximum of 6 skaters from the same team (with skaters from at least 3 teams) and FanDuel allows a maximum of 4 skaters from one team. In tournaments, you'll often see 3-3 stacks (meaning 3 players from one team and 3 from another team), 4-3, and 3-3-2 stacks.

I've been slowly drifting to more team stacks than line stacks. I think getting exposure to each line, especially through players that share power play time can be optimal during the playoffs. I will run some full line stacks, but I'm going to limit it. If you're going to do that, here are my favorites that fit that requirement:

Keep in mind, these are my favorites. These lines may change so keep an eye out for news during the day and during pre-game warmups. You should all do your own research and you might (and probably should) disagree with me in some spots. Don't be afraid to go your own way.
